Redlands Women's Soccer drops SCIAC opener against Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – On Wednesday afternoon the University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (3-2-1, 0-1-0) opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play at Chapman University falling 4-2 after leading 2-1 in the second half.

Less than four minutes into the game the Panthers scored to make it 1-0. The Bulldogs, though, came back and scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute and then the go-ahead goal in the 25th.

The first goal came from Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA) who was set up by Averie Stunz (Stanwood, WA), which was her first career assist.  Natalie Schumann hit a long clearance, which found the head of a Chapman player, who attempted to head it out.  But the ball would skim backwards right to Stunz who vollied it over the back line to Salinas who ran in for the finish from the 18-yard box.  Then on the second tally CJ Akroush (Pasadena, CA) would send in a long ball that deflected off the crossbar.  On its way down the CU keeper attempted to keep it from breaking the line but was unable to as she would fall into the goal seeing UR go up 2-1.

In the early stage of the second half Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) made a save and Salinas followed with a shot on goal in the first seven minutes, but then in the 63rd Chapman would tie things up at 2-2.

The Panthers would pull away in the final 14 minutes as they added another two goals to pull off the come from behind victory.

After allowing the game-tying goal, Redlands managed just one shot the rest of the game, which came from Salinas.

In the first 45 minutes the Bulldogs held a 5-4 shot advantage, a 2-1 corner advantage, and drew nine fouls in comparison to only two committed. In the second 45:00, however, the Maroon and Grey were outshot 14-3, had no corners to the Panthers six, and committed five fouls to the Panthers one.

The Bulldogs will be at Farquhar Field this Saturday, September 21 as they host Elmhurst University in a non-conference game beginning at 11:00 a.m.
