CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team lost 2-0 in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) Wednesday evening.
Things got off to a great start as the first eight shots of the game came from the Bulldogs in the opening 26 minutes with Zach Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) and Phillip Kostenko (Redmond, WA) each adding two attempts, while Landon Azavedo (Portland, OR), Taylor Bell (Highland, CA), Julian Weber (Haiku, HI), and Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) each with another.
Both of Kostenko's were on target but got saved as the game remained scoreless until the half.
Weber and Azavedo forced saves in the first 20 minutes of the second half and Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) made two stops himself and had another shot hit the crossbar as it was still scoreless after 65 minutes.
In the 73rd, however, the Stags found the back of the net for what would be the game-winner. They then doubled the lead in the 77th.
In the 81st minute things got a bit out of hand as three yellow cards were given, one to Redlands and two to CMS.
Whatever chance the Bulldogs had to comeback ended in the 86th minute when Azavedo was shown a red card, forcing the U of R to play down a player the rest of the way.
Each team finished with 12 shots a piece, with CMS holding the 6-5 advantage on shots-on-goal. Redlands held the 6-5 advantage on corner kicks and a combined seven cards were issued.
Redlands remains on the road in game two of three in-a-row this Saturday, September 28 as they travel to 2023 SCIAC Regular Season and Tournament Champion Occidental College with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
