Bulldogs Men's Soccer concedes final two goals to Whittier in 3-3 home draw

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (3-6-4, 1-3-3 SCIAC) held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Farquhar Field Saturday evening against Whittier College.

Each side forced a save by the other in the seventh minute with Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) earning an attempt and Benjamin Legrand (Las Vegas, NV) making a sliding defensive save at the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

In the 13th minute Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) had his shot blocked, which was picked up by Taylor Bell (Highland, CA) who then finished for a 1-0 U of R lead. It was his first of the season.

A few minutes later Darmanyan slipped a ball to Beckton inside the penalty area where he one-timed a shot past the diving Poet keeper for a quick 2-0 advantage in the first 18 minutes.

After allowing Whittier to pull a goal back in the 25th minute, Beckton found Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) three minutes later to re-establish the Maroon and Grey's two-goal lead, 3-1.

Starting Bulldog keeper Jason Salmeron (Winnetka, CA) made one save the rest of the first half as the Bulldogs were in strong position leading 3-1.

In the first nine minutes of the second 45 the Poets got three shot attempts, but none were of concern for Salmeron.

Claborn and a Poet then forced each keeper into save opportunities through 65 minutes. Following a stretch of 10 minutes with no dangerous looks, Whittier again got to within one in the 79th minute. They then tied the game in the 85th.

The final three looks for the Bulldogs all came from Beckton who forced a save, had a shot inside the box blocked, and in the final seconds had an attempt from around 25 yards out on a fastbreak that hit off the side of his foot and went wide of the goal as the final horn sounded.

As one would expect in a game with six combined goals the two sides combined for 34 shots (18-17) and had 14 shots on goal (7-7). There were also 24 fouls and three yellow cards.

Redlands will get another opportunity at home this coming Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Chapman University for the first time since the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Semi-Final last November.
