August scores first career goal in Redlands Women's Soccer home loss to Regals

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team (0-7-2, 0-3-1 SCIAC) fell 4-1 to No. 21 California Lutheran University (CLU) Wednesday evening at Farquhar Field.

Despite the three-goal loss, the Bulldogs were competitive with the Regals as one of the first three goals by CLU was an own goal before the Bulldogs thought they were within a goal in the second half before an offsides decision wiped that score off the scoreboard.

CLU was ahead 2-0 at halftime with Averie Stunz (Stanwood, WA) managing the lone shot on target for Redlands.

In the second half five of the first six shots were from the Reglas with Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) making two saves before the Regals found their third goal in the 52nd minute when the Bulldogs gave away possession inside their penalty area.

Three minutes later, though, First-Year Claire August (Mountlake Terrace, WA) intercepted a pass and combined a couple of passes with Natalie Turiace (San Dimas, CA) for a transition goal. August took the shot and hit the right post and it went into the right corner of the net for her first collegiate tally.

Twelve minutes later into the half Redlands thought they pulled to within one, 3-2, when Faith Kasper (Menifee, CA) sent a deep pass high into the air before seeing it bounce in the six-yard box finding its way into the back of the net, but after initially signaling that it was a goal, the assistant referee called offsides and instead of a 3-2 deficit, it remained at 3-1.

Stewart would make four more saves until a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box made it 4-1 CLU as the Bulldogs managed only one shot the rest of the way, which came from Malia Kuhl (Seattle, WA) in the 60th minute, after the August goal.

Overall, Stewart made eight saves on 12 shots faced. Also, three of the five Bulldog attempts and two of the three that were on target came from the bench.

Redlands remains at home for a match-up with Occidental College this Saturday, October 4 at 4:00 p.m. in game one of a doubleheader with the men's team who play at 7:00 p.m.
