Big fourth quarter leads Redlands Women's Basketball past Chapman in SCIAC opener

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (3-1, 1-0 SCIAC) held off Chapman University 75-57 in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener Wednesday evening inside Currier Gym.

The Bulldogs got out to a quick five-point lead, 7-2, thanks to points from Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ), Colbi Zorich (McMinnville, WA), and Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA). They maintained that lead at the end of the first 10 minutes thanks to an Olivia McIntyre (Spokane, WA) layup after an offensive rebound.

Redlands trailed for the first time at the 8:50 mark of the second, but AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) got the lead back seconds later on a fastbreak off an assist from Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA). Chapman, though, scored five of the final seven points of the half to lead by one, 31-30, at the break.

Across the final two and a half minutes of the third quarter the Bulldogs turned a four-point deficit, 45-41, into a six-point lead, 51-45, after 30 minutes thanks to six points off a pair of three pointers from Andrea Perkins (Seal Beach, CA).

McIlroy hit a jumper in the paint with 7:21 to play in the game giving Redlands their first double-digit lead of the game, 57-47. The advantage grew to as many as 22 before the Bulldogs sealed the win, 75-57.

Wick nearly pulled off a 20-20 game with 19 points and 17 rebounds.  McIlroy added 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists, Zorich and McIntyre also scored in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

For the game Redlands shot 42.6% from the field and 80% from the free-throw line.  They out-rebounded Chapman 39-31, had 17 fastbreak points, 10 second chance points, 34 points in the paint, forced 24 Chapman turnovers and grabbed 14 steals, turning them into 17 points.     

The Bulldogs host UC Santa Cruz this Saturday, December 6 at 1:00 p.m. in their final home non-conference game of the season.
