Redlands Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Whitworth

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands baseball team (8-4, 2-1 SCIAC) bounced back from their loss Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Whitworth University Saturday 6-4 and 11-5.

Game 1: Redlands 6 – Whitworth 4

The two starting pitchers kept the game scoreless until the fourth when the Pirates scored the first run of the game on an RBI-double. Nate Miller (San Jose, CA), though, drove in a pair of runs on a two-run double as Mark Kirkland (Redlands, CA) and Gabriel Ceja (Long Beach, CA) crossed the plate. Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) would make it three runs with a single to left.

In the sixth the lead grew to three, 4-1, thanks to a Tyler Barsness (Palm Desert, CA) single that allowed Miller to score.

Then in the eighth Whitworth tied the game at four.  But the Bulldogs came back with a game-winning triple by Barsness. Barsness then added an insurance run coming in on a wild pitch.

Barsness finished with three hits and two RBI's. Miller and Chetcuti each added two hits. Erik Radder (San Diego, CA) went 6.1 innings with one run given up and five strikeouts but left with the no decision. Brett Edwards (Santa Monica, CA) got the win after finishing the game with 1.1 scoreless innings.

Game 2: Redlands 11 – Whitworth 5

For the first time all series the Bulldogs were the first to strike as Rylan Morris (Fullerton, CA) came across on a Kirkland sacrifice fly.

The lead switched hands in the third when the Pirates went ahead 2-1 on a two-run double. The deficit would be short lived, however, as Miller's run on a balk started a five-run fourth for the Bulldogs.

Later in that fourth inning, Barsness singled home Burgess, Morris hit his first collegiate home run and Kirkland also hit an inside-the-park home run to left center that the center fielder was unable to hold onto traveling to the wall.

The final five Bulldog runs came on a Kirkland single, Ian Umscheid's (Beaumont, CA) first collegiate homer, Luke De Vries' (Irvine, CA) infield single, and a single through the left side by Morris.

Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) picked up his third win on the season after throwing five innings. Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) got the 12-out save as he struck out four pirates in his four innings.

The Bulldogs and Pirates end their four-game series Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at The Yard.
