Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hosn and Wick's double-doubles not enough for Redlands Women's Basketball at Claremont-M-S

CLAREMONT, Calif. – A fast first-quarter start was not enough for Redlands Women's Basketball (10-10, 5-6 SCIAC) as they lost 64-60 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action Wednesday evening.

AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) had four points and Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) added another five points to get the Bulldogs off to a strong 11-3 start. Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) then found Alex Facelo (San Jose, CA) for a three at the 2:41 mark moving the differential to an 11-point advantage.

Facelo would maintain that double-digit lead for the U of R after 10 minutes when Hosn found her again with :43 seconds to play as Redlands led 17-7.

The defense did not allow an Anthea point until the 6:46 mark of the second.  But their offense stalled gathering just one point coming off a Wick free throw.

CMS would take advantage of the slow start to the period as they led 24-23 thanks to a 17-5 run with only 1:41 left in the half.

The Bulldog offense finally got back on track with another Hicks three and a pair of free throws from Hicks and Colbi Zorich (Kenmore, WA), respectively, giving the Maroon and Grey back the lead, 30-28, at the half.

The Athenas scored first in the second half at the 8:38 mark re-taking the lead. They would keep the small margin for the entirety of the quarter.

The lead grew to as many as seven with only :55 seconds to play in the period before Leaya McKinney (Sedalia, CO) scored the final four points to make it a one-possession game, 47-44, heading into the fourth.

In the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter the U of R offense continued to play well, scoring 12 points, including the last six to reclaim their lead, 56-55, with 4:40 left.

CMS, though, drew a foul and made both at the line with 3:49 to play as they went back in front holding this lead the rest of the game.

Hosn finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Her 10 assists are tied for the seventh most in single-game program history.

Wick finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She now has 256 rebounds this season, the sixth most in single-season history. The record is 363 held by Leslie Ferguson in 1994-1995.

The Bulldogs will now host California Lutheran University this Saturday, February 8 at 5:00 p.m. as the athletics department celebrates 50 Years of Women's Varsity Athletics.
