REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Water Polo team (1-16, 0-5 SCIAC) found themselves down 8-2 in the final three minutes of the first half, but a 5-0 run brought them to within one. No. 3 Chapman University, though, finished off the game with 11 of the final 15 goals as the Bulldogs lost a competitive game, 19-11, Saturday morning at the Thompson Aquatic Center (TAC).
Down six, 8-2, following a successful Panther penalty with 2:49 to play in the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored four times to pull within two, 8-6, at the half.
Across the opening 16:00 minutes Christine Chua (Arcadia, CA) scored twice, Lucia Notaro (Thousand Oaks, CA) once, followed by Emma Parker (Yucaipa, CA) who went on a personal 3-0 run in the span of :72 seconds.
The strong close to the first half continued to begin the second as Parker found Alyssa Sorrell (Highland, CA) inside set for the U of R's seventh goal with 7:26 on the clock.
After conceding five times in less than three minutes, Chapman kept Redlands off the scoreboard for four minutes, while they tallied four goals to create some separation leading 12-7.
Four of the final six goals of the third period, however, came from the Maroon and Grey as they once again made it a competitive game trailing by three, 14-11, after 24 minutes of play. Those four Bulldog goals came from Marlie Potocki (Joliet, Ill.), Parker, Notaro, and Sorrell with Kennedy Mobley (Wildomar, CA) picking up her first assist.
Redlands found the back of the net twice in the first quarter and nine times combined in the middle frames, but they were held scoreless in the fourth as Chapman was able to pull away for the road win.
Parker finished with six points on four goals and two assists. She also dominated defensively with three steals and two drawn exclusions. Notaro had five points thanks to two goals and three assists. She also played well on the defensive side with two drawn exclusions and a steal. Aubree Nabors (Conroe, TX) had the best game of her career with a career-high 11 saves and a .367 save percentage, the second highest. Kaile Itow (Morgan Hill, CA) quietly added three steals and a won a sprint.
The Bulldogs travel to Pasadena next Wednesday, March 26 for a 7:00 p.m. game with Caltech.
