NEWARK, N.J. – Anders Beckton's (Seattle, WA) brace led the University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (1-0) to a 2-1 season-opening victory at Rutgers University-Newark Friday night.
In the 25th minute Beckton got the U of R on the scoreboard when he dribbled into the box drawing a penalty that he would convert putting the Bulldogs on top.
The Scarlet Raiders would respond with just over a minute remaining in the first half as the two teams went into the break tied at one.
After a slow offensive second half where Redlands did not allow a shot and had only two of their own, Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) was able to find an opening chipping a ball in behind the backline where Beckton ran onto it before slotting home the eventual game-winner in the 75th minute.
In the final 15 minutes the Scarlet Raiders managed just one shot as the Bulldogs got the 2-1 win in their first contest of two on their east coast trip.
Beckton finished with four shots, two of which were on goal, Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) took another two shots and Darmanyan with another, while adding an assist. Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA) played all 90:00 minutes between the posts and was not called upon to make a stop as he gathered the win.
The Bulldogs will face Swarthmore College on Sunday, August 31 in Pennsylvania at 3:00 p.m. pacific daylight time.
