SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (1-1) took the first lead in the second half thanks to a Connor Claborn (Santa Clarita, CA) goal off a Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) assist, but the Swarthmore College Garnet scored twice in the final 23 minutes to secure a 2-1 win.
The game got off to a fast start by both teams with Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA) forcing a save in the fifth minute before the Garnet were stopped twice by Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA).
In a key sequence in a five-minute period between the 29th and 34th minutes Bachman made three saves, one to his left, one to his right and one in the center of goal as he kept the game scoreless after 34 minutes.
Beckton tried to sneak in a late goal past the keeper to the bottom left corner, but it was saved, and the half came to a close :32 seconds later with the score in the same place it started.
The Bulldogs were on the front foot to begin the second 45 with their first four shots coming from Nico Hidalgo (Portland, OR), Darmanyan, and Becton twice with one requiring a save.
Then, in the 54th Darmanyan found Claborn for the opening goal. The play came after Swarthmore took a corner that got punched out by Bachman and fell to a Garnet player who took a long-distance strike. The shot was blocked by a Bulldog defender and deflected to Beckton who went on a solo counter attack.
On the counter he got to the top box and waited for help and eventually passed it off to Claborn who one-touched it to Darmanyan who did the same back. Claborn then dribbled to his left towards the top-middle of the 18-yard box and finished inside the right post for his first of the season.
Bachman was forced into two more save opportunities until the Garnet tied the game at one in the 68th minute.
Kiran Treacy-Hind (Cortlandt Manor, NY) tried to reclaim the lead in the 70th, but it was handled in goal.
In the 83rd minute Bachman made another save, but just eight seconds later Swarthmore added the eventual game-winner and held Redlands to only one shot the rest of the way as the Bulldogs fell for the first time this season.
Beckton led the Bulldogs with four shots, three of which were on goal. Claborn and Darmanyan had two apiece. Bachman made eight saves on 10 shots on target faced.
Redlands returns home before flying out later this week to Virginia for a pair of games against Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU) on September 6 (2:00pm) and Christopher Newport University (CNU) on Sunday, September 7 (3:00pm).
