Bulldog Men's Soccer drops SCIAC opener at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team (2-4-1) dropped a 3-1 match-up at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Saturday afternoon putting away a penalty goal from Anders Beckton (Seattle, WA).  The Bulldogs had won 41 straight games dating back to 2002 against the Beavers, but would face adversity on the road in their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener.

The Beavers jumped on top with goals in the eighth and 10th minutes and it was not until the 32nd when Gavin Facer (Murrieta, CA) had his attempt miss to the left for the Bulldogs' first shot attempt.

The rest of the half Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA), Anthony Sena (Henderson, NV), and Jacob White (Fontana, CA) all had shots with White's being the first on goal for the Maroon and Grey.

In the second half the Bulldogs came out aggressively taking the first five shots, including looks that required saves taken by Benjamin Evans (Bend, OR) and Beckton.

The fifth of those five shots came from Beckton coming on a penalty attempt, which he slotted home to the left corner with the keeper guessing right. It is his sixth of the season pulling the Bulldogs to within one, 2-1, in the 73rd minute.

The penalty was drawn by Jared Keyvan (Costa Mesa, CA) who was taken down in the box in front of goal on a corner kick.

Despite cutting the deficit to one, it was Caltech who had the next two shots. The first was stopped by Brady Bachman (San Diego, CA), but the second, which came in the 84th minute found the back of the net making it 3-1 Beavers.

Ronaldo Fernandez (Murrieta, CA) and Ryan Hubbard (Aliso Viejo, CA) each had attempts in the final six minutes, but neither were good enough to cut into the lead as the Bulldogs lost their SCIAC Opener.

Facer, Beckton, and Evans each finished with two shots. Bachman made three saves in 90:00 minutes.

Redlands will stay on the road as they travel to the University of La Verne on Wednesday, September 24 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
