LA VERNE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (11-2, 4-1 SCIAC) put the game away early at the University of La Verne Wednesday evening outscoring the Leopards by 16 points in the first half and 20 after three quarters during their 75-56 win.
In her return to action from injury, AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) scored the first points of the game and Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ) picked up the assist. Those were the first two points of 10 unanswered to begin the game for the U of R. McIlroy had five of her own, while Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) fed Andrea Perkins (Seal Beach, CA) on a fastbreak three.
The Leopards cut the deficit to four before Olivia McIntyre (Spokane, WA) got into the paint in the final :10 seconds of the opening quarter to help the Bulldogs gain an eight-point lead, 16-8, after 10 minutes of action.
Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) and Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) each made jumpers in the first minute of the second period to give Redlands their largest lead at 12, 20-8.
The lead was then 14 with 4:18 remaining before a quick 4-0 La Verne run. McIlroy then scored five points in :16 seconds helping Redlands take a 16-point lead, 38-22, into the half.
In a low-scoring opening third quarter the two sides combined for 10 points in just under seven minutes. Wick and Hosn each tallied a pair of baskets, which extended Redlands' lead to 24, 51-27, with 1:27 to play in the third.
In the final quarter where 37 percent of the total points were scored, the Bulldogs managed to lead by at least 17 and as many as 22.
Colbi Zorich (Woodinville, WA) opened the scoring for the Bulldogs and Monica Villanueva (Harbor City, CA) ended it with McIlroy leading the way with eight points across the final 10 minute period.
Wick returned to action with 13 points and seven rebounds, McIlroy had 20 points, six rebounds, and four assists and Hosn had a 12-point, seven-rebound performance.
On the night the Bulldogs shot 40.7% from the field, had 32 points in the paint, 22 points from the bench and 20 points off turnovers.
Redlands plays travels to Whittier, CA this Saturday, January 17 when they take on Whittier College beginning at 4 p.m.
