REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's basketball team (13-4, 6-3) ended their two-game losing streak with a 73-61 win inside Currier Gymnasium Saturday night against Occidental College.
After three plus minutes of play the Bulldogs looked to be in a good position after AJ Wick scored four points and Leila Hosn made a jumper in the paint for a 6-0 lead, but the Tigers came back with seven of the next 10 points to cut the lead to two, 9-7, with 3:02 to play.
A Carly Hick free throw with two minutes on the clock was Redlands lone point across the final 4:32 as Occidental held an 11-10 lead after 10 minutes.
Occidental's lead was seven, 26-19, with 70 seconds remaining in the second quarter, but Colbi Zorich assisted Wick on the fastbreak and Olivia McIntyre got to the line and converted on both as they trailed by only three, 26-23, at the half.
The 4-0 run to end the first half was extended to 11-2 in the third as they were up by their largest margin since the first quarter. The Bulldogs held the two-point lead as late as the 7:04 mark, but from that point forward the Tigers scored 16 of the next 26 points and were up four with 42 seconds remaining.
Much like the first quarter, the Bulldogs would score the final three points and were only down one, 48-47, after 30 minutes.
Redlands trailed by two at the 8:19 mark of the final quarter before Teagan McIlroy made a jumper that sparked a 10-0 run that put them up eight, 60-52, with only 4:32 to play.
During the run Wick had four points with McIlroy and Aliyah Anderson adding three each.
The rest of the way the closest Occidental got was four as the Bulldogs made 12 of their 14 free throws.
Wick finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. McIlroy missed a double double by one rebound and she tallied 19 points thanks to 9-of-10 mark at the line.
Redlands travels to Orange this coming Wednesday for a matchup against Chapman University at 7 p.m.
