Redlands Women's Basketball has big fourth quarter against Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team (13-4, 6-3 SCIAC) put together a big 73-61 win inside Currier Gym Saturday night against Occidental College.

After three plus minutes of play the Bulldogs looked to be in a good position after AJ Wick (Henderson, NV) scored four points followed by a Leila Hosn (Seattle, WA) jumper in the paint for a 6-0 UR lead, but the Tigers came back with seven of the next 10 to cut the lead to two, 9-7, with 3:02 to play.

A Carly Hicks (Portland, OR) free throw with two minutes on the clock was Redlands lone point across the final 4:32 as Occidental held an 11-10 lead after 10 minutes.

Occidental's lead grew to seven, 26-19, with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, but Colbi Zorich (Woodinville, WA) found Wick on the fastbreak and Olivia McIntyre (Tacoma, WA) got to the line and converted both as the Bulldogs trailed by only three, 26-23, at the half.

The 4-0 run to end the first half was extended to 11-2 in the third for the Maroon and Grey as they were up by their largest margin since the first quarter. The Bulldogs held the two-point lead as late as the 7:04 mark, but from that point forward the Tigers scored 16 of the next 26 points and were up four with :42 seconds remaining.

Much like the first quarter, the Bulldogs would score the final three points of the period and were only down one, 48-47, after 30 minutes.

Redlands trailed by two at the 8:19 mark of the final quarter before Teagan McIlroy (Phoenix, AZ) made a jumper sparking a 10-0 run that put the U of R up eight, 60-52, with only 4:32 to play.

During the run Wick had four points with McIlroy and Aliyah Anderson (Oceanside, CA) each adding three.

The rest of the way the closest Occidental got was four as the Bulldogs made 12 of their 14 free throws to pull off the home victory.

Wick finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. McIlroy missed with a double double by one rebound and she tallied 19 points thanks to a 9-of-10 mark at the line.

Redlands travels to Orange this coming Wednesday, January 28 for a match-up against Chapman University beginning at 7:00 p.m.
