CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands swim and dive teams competed valiantly against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday, with several Bulldogs earning individual victories and posting strong performances despite falling 245-45 on the women's side and 238-44 on the men's side.
Distance Standouts Lead the Way
Sophomore
Joesph Madigan (Arlington, VA) delivered the most impressive performance of the day for the Bulldogs, capturing victory in the grueling 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:35.89. Madigan displayed remarkable consistency throughout the race, splitting under :33 seconds for nearly every 100-yard segment, while outlasting the competition in the longest event of the meet.
Junior
Will Coziahr (Chula Vista, CA) also represented Redlands well in the distance events, placing second in the men's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:12.13, showing the program's depth in distance swimming.
Breaststroke Power
The Bulldogs found success in the breaststroke events, with freshman
Tim Jensen (Elmhurst, Ill.) emerging as a bright spot. Jensen claimed second place in the 100-yard Breast, touching in at 59.19, and followed up with another runner-up finish in the 200-yard Breast (2:08.92). His consistent performances in both sprint and distance breaststroke races demonstrate his versatility and potential for the program.
Senior
Ethan Chir (Henderson, NV) also made his mark in the breaststroke, finishing third in the 100-yard event (59.57) and fourth in the 200-yard race (2:07.78). The duo gave Redlands a formidable one-two punch in the stroke.
Backstroke Excellence
Sophomore
Flynn Bayne (Seattle, WA) showcased his abilities on his back, earning fourth place in the 100-yard Back with a time of 55.01 and fifth in the 200-yard Back (2:06.88). Bayne also contributed to Redlands' fifth-place finish in the 200-yard Medley Relay with a 1:38.66.
Women's Diving Bright Spots
On the women's side, sophomore
Sydney Kerns (West Covina, CA) represented the Bulldogs well on the boards, placing fifth in both the 1-Meter dive (203.90 points) and the 3-Meter dive (211.40 points). Junior
Ayanna Leal (Las Cruces, N.M.) also competed in the 1-Meter event, finishing seventh with 186.40 points.
Relay Efforts
The Bulldogs showed team depth with multiple relay entries. The men's 'A' 200-yard Medley Relay team of Bayne,
Noah Tikoo (Ovedio, Fla.), Chir, and Jensen finished fifth in 1:38.66.
In the women's 200-yard Medley Relay, Redlands' 'A' team of
Lina Matera (Hingham, MA),
Athena Fitzgerald (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA),
Clare Carroll (Jamestown, R.I.), and
Avery Wells (Seattle, WA) touched fourth in 1:56.21.
Butterfly and IM Performances
Landynn Olivas (El Centro, CA) secured second place in the men's 200-yard Fly with a time of 2:06.20, while Chir added a tie for fourth in the 200-yard IM (1:57.01), demonstrating his range across multiple strokes.
Freshman Contributions
Several Redlands freshmen made notable contributions throughout the meet. Carroll was a bright spot in sprint freestyle events, taking fourth in both the 50-yard Free (25.18) and the 100-yard Free (55.90).
Finn Mutuc (Boulder, CO) showed promise in the distance events, while Fitzgerald competed in multiple breaststroke races.
Redlands returns to the pool next weekend, Saturday, February 7 for their final tri-meet on the season when they travel to Whittier, CA to take on Whittier College and Occidental College. Diving is set for 10:30am and swimming at 11:00am.
