MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The University of Redlands swimming and diving teams are both in eighth place with one day remaining at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships.
Men
The Bulldog men have 139 points, a total of 47 for the day, after 29 events. They are 34 points behind Occidental College for seventh place.
The individual scorers included Ethan Chir in seventh place, scoring 12 points in the A final of the 100 yard breaststroke (56.24). Tim Jensen took 14th overall (three points) as he swam a 57.66 in the B final of the 100 breast. Then Flynn Bayne finished 13th in the 100 yard backstroke, adding four points with a time of 52.87.
In the 200 freestyle relay Jensen, Chir, Bayne, and Kadyn Butcher finished seventh with a time of 1:25.97. The other quartet of Connor O'Sullivan, Finn Mutuc, Joseph Madigan, and David Basa chipped in four points with a time of 1:29.47.
Women
The Bulldog women scored 44 points on the third day which brings their total to 138 after three days of competition. They are only nine points out of seventh place held by Whittier College.
Getting things going were their divers Sydney Kerns and Ayanna Leal in ninth and 14th place in the 3m dive. Kerns scored 318.55 points across 11 dives which gave the Bulldogs nine points as a team.
Her best dive came on her second attempt when she converted a forward dive ½ twist straight into a score of 36. It was one of five total 30 plus point dives.
Leal took 13th in the team scoring which gave Redlands four points. She totaled 249.45 points. Her best dive was her fourth when she totaled 31.35 points on a back dive straight.
In the swimming portion Kileigh Ackerman took 14th for three points in the B final of the 100 back (59.53).
Brooklyn Green, Avery Wells, Lina Matera, and Clare Carroll had a very strong performance in the 200 free relay, taking sixth place (1:40.01) and totaling a team-high for the day of 26 points. Their B final team of Kaile Itow, Athena Fitzgerald, Aubree Nabors, and Ella Suazo combined for another two points and a time of 1:43.72.
Redlands will complete the championships tomorrow as they look to move up a spot.
