TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Redlands baseball team (3-4) lost game one of their doubleheader and game two of the four-game series 8-2 at the University of Puget Sound (UPS) Saturday before ending the day with a
Game 1: Redlands 2 – Puget Sound 8
The Bulldogs tied the game at one in the fourth inning when Amani Wilson doubled home Anthony Thomas.
A pair of solo home runs, however, in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-1 UPS which would end up being enough offense for the Loggers.
UPS scored five more times across the fifth through seventh innings as Redlands were trailing by seven, 8-1, after seven complete innings.
In the eighth Thomas had a one-out single before Jesse Bullard brought him home on a double to center. A pair of infield outs later and the Bulldogs scoring opportunity ended.
Nevan Namgoong walked with one out in the ninth, but he would be forced out on a fielder's choice before a strike out ended the game.
Thomas had two of the Bulldogs six hits and scored both runs. Aziz Bishop also reached base safely twice with a triple and walk.
Game 2: Redlands 4 – Puget Sound 12
In the third game of the series the Bulldogs were even with the Loggers at one in the third after Nate Miller doubled home Ian Umscheid.
Starter Chad Kober was cruising along with two outs and a runner at first in the fourth in a 1-1 game before a pair of UPS doubles made it 3-1.
Then in the fifth he had two outs once again with a runner at first after a fielder's choice. The next batter tripled which made it 4-1. Following a pitching change to Tanner Currier, the Loggers were able to scratch across another run to make it 5-1 as Currier got out of a bases loaded jam with a groundout.
The escape looked to be huge in the next half inning as Luke Hanson walked and scored on a Mason Chetcuti triple to center. Tanner Gerosa then singled home Chetcuti with two outs before a single by Umscheid and walk to Bullard loaded the bases for Thomas. Thomas was hit by a pitch and pushed home a fourth run that made it a 5-4 deficit despite a strike out to end the frame.
The wheels on the mound continued to wobble in the bottom of the sixth, however, as the Loggers hit a two-run home run. They then added a run in the seventh and four in the eighth to secure the series win.
The top three in the order had four of their seven hits and drew four of their six walks, but the rest of the lineup went 3-for-23 and left 11 on base.
Redlands will look to avoid the series sweep tomorrow morning with first pitch at 11 a.m.
