SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Redlands indoor track and field teams posted 12 new top 10 times and marks at the Whitworth Indoor Invitational this weekend.
Men
Eight of those new top 10 times and marks came from the men with Sam James leading the way with three. He competed in the heptathlon where he took fourth with 4,311 points, the new number four mark in program history.
In the seven-event competition he ran an 8.77 in the 60m hurdles which won him the event and moved him into sixth place in program history. Then in the 1000m he took fourth with a 3:13.04, the fifth-fastest time in program history.
The other five new top 10 marks came from Nikolas Sorich who took sixth in the heptathlon with 4,119 points, the seventh-most. He finished as the runner-up in the pole vault with a height of 3.55m, 11' 7.75" which is good enough for 10th-best. He ran a 3:13.86 in the 1000m and took sixth in the race and moved into sixth place in program history.
The final two in the top 10 included a new program record in the 3000m. Stian Asper ran seventh in the race, coming across the line in 8:37.21, the new program record. David Huggins was a few spots back in 10th place with an 8:38.44, the new second-fastest time.
Christian Ferguson was the runner-up in the weight throw with a first attempt 17.29m, 56' 8.75". His personal best is 17.80m and came a couple of weeks ago when he set the program record.
Women
Four new top 10 marks and times were set by the Bulldogs. Shaylee Heron had two of them as she was the third-place finisher in the pentathlon with 2,775 points, the seventh-most points in program history. She also ran a 2:47.48 in the 800m during the pentathlon and took second place. Her time is the 10th-fastest.
Mari Evonuk and Leilani Mayne also competed in the pentathlon where they posted the ninth and 10th-highest totals in program history. Evonuk scored 2,597 points and took sixth while Mayne was ninth with 2,406 points.
Not to be forgotten was Elisabeth Eichinger's winning point total of 3,236. Her score of 3,279 points last spring is her personal best and ranks third in the top 10.
Redlands second-to-final indoor meet to qualify for the NCAA Championships comes this Friday, February 20 as they head back to Flagstaff, Arizona for the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Tune-Up.
