U of R Women's Water Polo drops SCIAC opener to Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's water polo team (1-7) began Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Saturday morning against Chapman University where a slow offensive start ended up costing them as they lost 16-6.

Trailing 2-0 late in the first quarter Alyssa Sorrell got the Bulldogs on the board with a tally with seven seconds remaining to give Redlands a jolt going into the second.

At the 3:18 mark of the second, trailing 4-1, Marlie Potocki was able to beat the Panther keeper to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. Chapman, though ended the half on a 5-1 run as the lone Redlands goal came as time expired after goalkeeper Sofia Mather scored once again this season on a 7-on-6 to make it a 9-3 deficit after 16 minutes.

Redlands was held scoreless in the third, but in the first minute of the fourth Sorrell scored her second on a powerplay. Kylie Brown then found Lucia Notaro for the first of two unanswered goals to end the game. Ainsley Killian set up Potocki for the second.

Potocki and Sorrell each finished with two points while the defense of Kiera Federline, Notaro, Sorrell, Potocki, and Aubrey Stevenson combined for 10 drawn exclusions.

Mather made seven saves and played the first 16 minutes. Natalie Abril played the final 16 minutes, making seven saves and taking possession from the Panthers twice.

Redlands hosts their SCIAC home opener next Wednesday at 4 p.m. as they host California Lutheran University.
