CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Redlands baseball team (7-6) scored seven times in the opening frame to lead them to a 14-11 win in game one before falling 8-5 in game two of their four-game series with Hendrix College.
Game 1 (W, 14-11)
The Bulldogs put up a seven spot in the first inning thanks to an RBI-double from Ian Umscheid (Beaumont, CA), who was just named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week, an RBI-single from Nate Miller (San Jose, CA) and Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) with Luke Hanson (Escondido, CA) walking with the bases loaded.
Redlands conceded once in the bottom of the first before getting six more runs to take a 14-3 lead in the sixth. Anthony Thomas (Moreno Valley, CA) singled home Umscheid, Chetcuti drew a bases loaded walk, Sean McCance (Irvine, CA) drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Hanson hit a two-run double, and Amani Wilson (Seaside, CA) doubled home Hanson for the Bulldogs' sixth run.
The Warriors, though, scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh to pull within four, 14-11. Chad Kober (Castaic, CA), however, ended the game with 2.1 innings to seal the win.
Hanson, Miller, Thomas, Chetcuti, and McCance all had two hits as the Bulldogs pounded out 13 bases knocks and drew another nine walks. Joe Godoy (Los Angeles, CA) got the win after throwing five innings and giving up just one run.
Game 2 (L, 8-5)
In a more pitcher friendly game, the Bulldogs still managed to take a quick 3-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI base knock from Umscheid and Thomas with the third run coming on a throwing error.
Hendrix came back to tie the game at three in the fourth and took a 7-3 lead in the fifth.
After being held scoreless for five innings, Redlands got two runs back in the seventh on a pair of RBI singles hit back up the middle by Umscheid and Miller as the deficit was cut down to two, 7-5.
The Warriors got the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh as the two sides saw the series get evened at a game each.
Umscheid had two more hits, while Hanson, Thomas, Chetcuti, and Wilson all reached base safely multiple times.
Brett Edwards (Santa Monica, CA) and Tate Keddington (Boise, ID) struggled in their appearances on the mound, but Jayden Broderick (Castaic, CA) threw 2.2 innings with only one run allowed to end the game.
The two sides play a single game tomorrow, February 28 with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. pacific time.
