Redlands Baseball completes season-opening SCIAC sweep of Whittier

REDLANDS, Calif. – Late game heroics carried the University of Redlands Baseball team (3-0, 3-0 SCIAC) to a doubleheader sweep of Whittier College Saturday as they finished off the series taking all three to open 2026.

Game 1 (Redlands 2 – Whittier 0)

The Bulldogs and Poets were scoreless for seven and a half innings until the bottom half of the eighth where they scored both of their runs.

The inning began with a fly out before Luke Hanson drew a walk. He was then moved up by Tyler Barsness who got aboard on a single. After Tanner Gerosa advanced Hanson within 90 feet of home, Barsness stole second and Hanson advanced home on a double steal and throwing error by the Purple & Gold. The error also allowed Barsness to come all the way around to score making it 2-0.

Tanner Currier then stranded a leadoff double at third enducing three groundouts in the top half of the ninth to secure the win.  Barsness and Hanson each reached base safely twice. Erik Radder threw six scoreless innings before Tanner Currier ended the game with three scoreless innings as he got his first win of the season.

Game 2 (Redlands 9 – Whittier 5 | 7 innings)

It was a 2-0 Poet lead after four and half innings before the Bulldogs came back to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth.

Gerosa and Nate Miller each walked before Anthony Thomas drove in both on a two-run double to tie the game. Mason Chetcuti then advanced Thomas to third with one out.

Sean McCance singled up the middle and made it 3-2. After an error that allowed him to make it into scoring position, Eddy Stone found some right field grass and made it 4-2. The final run came on a single by Barsness down the right field line.

An error and two walks had the bases loaded for Ian Umscheid the next inning. He would take advantage of the opportunity, singling home two Bulldogs to help reclaim the lead, 6-5, after the Poets got three in the top half.

Stone and Gerosa had the other three RBI with a pair of singles that made it into left field as McCance, Stone, and Nevan Namgoong came home.

With darkness descending, Tate Keddington worked around a leadoff double with three consecutive strikeouts as the Bulldogs sealed the win in seven innings.

Redlands' four-game weekend finishes Sunday at 11 a.m. as they host McMurray University for a single game.
