CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team (3-4, 0-1 SCIAC) put together a strong showing on the road Saturday against No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer falling 7-0.
The Bulldogs had an opportunity to take the early doubles point with the No. 2 team of
Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and
Hadley Allaria (Kirkwood, MO) taking their match 6-3. Pomona-Pitzer tied things up at No. 3 as
Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) would fall 6-1. The decisive point came at the top spot from
Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) who would come up short 7-5 allowing PP to take the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles the Maroon and Grey attempted a comeback and put forth a valiant effort but would see the Sagehens grab all six spots. Reynoso at No. 3 dropped in a competitive match 6-4, 6-2 and Whelan would compete at No. 2 falling 6-1, 6-4.
Truong played at No. 4 and picked up two games in a 6-0, 6-2 defeat and Kumar at No. 5 would fall 6-0, 6-1. The last two matches on were at No. 1 and No. 6. Allaria made a statement early at No. 6 taking her opening frame 6-3 but failed to keep the momentum as she would drop 6-1, 6-1 over the next two sets.
Deng at the top-spot also went three-sets forcing a third after dropping the opening frame 6-1. She went on to win the second 6-4 before getting broken late in the third 6-4.
Redlands returns to the court Thursday, March 12 when they host No. 10 Bowdoin College beginning at 4:00pm.
