REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands baseball team (12-13, 6-4) run-ruled California Institute of Technology (Caltech) 14-4 in seven innings Friday afternoon thanks to three RBI days from Nate Miller and Eddy Stone.
Miller got the scoring started with two outs in the first as he doubled over the head of the left fielder into the gap which allowed Mason Chetcuti to score. The next batter Anthony Thomas added another run with a double to center.
Following a scoreless second from both sides, the Beavers tied the game in the third at two after a throwing error allowed a pair of runners to come home.
The Bulldogs, though, responded with four runs. Thomas singled home Ian Umscheid, and after a wild pitch allowed Chetcuti to cross home plate, Stone hit a two-run double, plating Jesse Bullard and Thomas.
Caltech once again had a counter, scoring on a single to right to cut their deficit to three, 6-3. Redlands, however, came right back in the bottom of the fourth and put four more on the board.
Miller started it with a two-run double before a sacrifice fly from Stone. The final run of the inning and 10th of the game came when Thomas was able to come home as the Beavers attempted to get Bullard in a run down between first and second.
The runs that helped seal the run-rule were in the sixth. Bullard doubled home Thomas, Stone found grass in center, Karlsen Drake had an infield single that plated Bullard, and the final two runs came on sacrifice flies by Tyler Barsness and Umscheid.
On the mound Joe Godoy got the start and went six innings with only one earned run allowed. He struck out five a picked up his third win.
The Bulldogs and Beavers play a doubleheader tomorrow morning at 11 p.m. in Pasadena.
