Bulldog Women’s Tennis battled Division I Oakland University

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team fell 5-2 Tuesday evening against Oakland University inside the Verdieck Tennis Center. Even though the Grizzlies were a Division I team out of conference, the Bulldogs were still able to put them to work with a number of strong match-ups.

Doubles started out promising, as No.3 team of Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) breezed through their set winning 6-3. However, the Bulldogs fell in the next two matches, overall losing the doubles point to the Grizzlies.  Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) fell 6-2 at the top spot and the No. 2 team of Hadley Allaria (Kirkwood, MO) and Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) would fall 6-3.

Moving into singles, the energy continued to look promising for the Bulldogs. Kumar was the first match off at No.4 falling in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.  But Redlands bounced back quickly.  Deng quickly took care of business at No. 1 winning 6-0, 6-2.  Allaria followed suit at No. 6 beating her opponent 6-4, 6-0, which leveled the match at 2-2.

The last three matches battled out for an additional hour, with two of the three having to go into a full third set because neither team had clinched.  Unfortunately, all three of those points went to Oakland.  Whelan ended up falling a tight 7-6, 6-4 match at No. 2.  Reynoso and Truong both split sets with their opponents, but ultimately fell in the third sets 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, respectively.

Redlands will travel to No. 4 Pomona Pitzer for their conference opener on Saturday, March 7 beginning at 1:30pm.
