REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands baseball team (7-9, 3-1) held the fifth-highest scoring team in the country, No. 20 Pomona-Pitzer, scoreless for six innings and came back from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 but ultimately fell 6-4 in 11 innings.
Joe Godoy got the start and went 5.1 scoreless with seven strikeouts and only three hits allowed. The Sagehens, though, put three on the board in the seventh.
Redlands did respond, however, scoring on a Nate Miller RBI-double into right center that plated Ian Umscheid. Luke Hanson then found the five-six hole on the left side to tie that game with Miller and pinch runner Nevan Namgoong scoring.
Pomona-Pitzer came back and reclaimed the lead in the eighth with a sacrifice fly, but that was wiped away with a Jesse Bullard solo home run to right center in the bottom half.
Following a scoreless ninth and 10th innings, the Sagehens got their fifth and sixth runs in the 11th with a solo home run and a sacrifice fly. Redlands would be unable to muster anything in response as they were sat down in order.
Hanson had two hits and two RBI from his leadoff spot. The rest of the team went 3-for-33 with two RBI.
The pitching, though, was more than good enough to win. Godoy, Chad Kober, Tanner Currier, Aziz Bishop, and Kethan Efron combined for 13 strikeouts and only four of their 13 hits allowed went for extra bases.
The two teams play the second and third games of the series in a doubleheader in Claremont tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
