ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's water polo team (3-13) picked up an 11-9 win over Carthage College Saturday morning in Orange before finishing their fourth game of the Convergence Tournament with an 18-4 loss to Biola University in Fullerton.
Redlands 11 – Carthage 9
Aubree Nabors got the Bulldogs off to an early lead. Following a pair of Firebird goals, Lucia Notaro got the ball inside to Alyssa Sorrell who evened the game at two on a powerplay.
The two sides then traded two goals each the remainder of the first quarter. Sorrell found Teagan May with 2:58 on the clock and Aubrey Stevenson beat the Carthage keeper with 22 seconds remaining as the game was tied at four after eight minutes.
Nabors' five-meter penalty conversion at the 3:47 mark of the second quarter was the only goal as Redlands' defense held Carthage scoreless for 10 minutes and 24 seconds.
Despite the great defense, Nabors' penalty and Sorrell's powerplay goal in the first minute of the third were the lone scores for the Bulldogs as they were only ahead by two, 6-4.
With 5:47 to play in the third the Firebirds scored their first of three goals while the Bulldogs lone tally came from Kiera Federline off a Stevenson assist which had the game tied at seven with under six to play in the game.
Redlands, however, finished the fourth quarter on a 4-2 run with Marlie Potocki finding the back of the net twice and Federline and Nabors adding the other two to help secure the win.
Nabors had four points thanks to a hat trick and an assist. Federline had two goals and two steals. Notaro had a big day defensively with three drawn exclusions and a steal. Sorrell continued to be the engine for the Bulldogs, scoring twice with two assists and five drawn exclusions.
Sofia Mather made the start and finished with five saves and a steal. Natalie Abril made six saves, all of which came in the fourth quarter, and picked up the win.
Redlands 4 – Biola 18
The Bulldogs showed great fight in the opening quarter, scoring twice to stay within three, 5-2, after eight minutes. Nabors and Potocki were Redlands' two goal scorers.
Redlands were nearly held scoreless for the next two quarters, but Ratto came to the rescue with 58 seconds remaining in the third. Then late in the fourth Federline picked up an assist as she found Sorrell for her first of the game.
With this long tournament complete, the Bulldogs will return to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play this Wednesday when they travel to Whittier College.
