CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team traveled to the Bisantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday battling top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling 5-2.
The Bulldogs had a huge start making an early statement successfully taking the doubles point. On court three
Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and
Jasmine Sheets (Hesperia, CA) rolled winning 6-0. Next to them,
Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) grinded out a 6-4 victory on court two. Minutes later, court one with
Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) edged their opponent 6-3 firing up the Maroon and Grey.
Going into singles with this momentum the energy was high on courts. However, the Athenas would end up taking five of the six next points. Truong at No. 5 fell 6-0, 6-1, Kumar at No. 4 fell 6-3, 6-1, Reynoso at No. 3 fell 6-2, 6-0 and Whelan dropped at No. 2 6-1, 6-3.
Deng on the top court had another walk in the park, as she convincingly overtook the No. 3 ranked player in the region 6-2, 6-1. This would put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard for a second point of the day.
The last match on was
Eve Laurent (Portland, OR) at No. 6. She got her footing at the end of the first set and started to make a break at the beginning of the second, but ultimately fell 6-1, 6-3.
Redlands returns to the court Monday, April 13 when they host the re-scheduled Caltech match beginning at 5:00pm.
