Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Lightning and rain delays did not deter Redlands Women’s Tennis as they take down No. 25 Caltech 5-2

REDLANDS, Calif. – On Monday night, the University of Redlands Women's Tennis team took on No. 25 Caltech, pulling off the 5-2 win inside the Verdieck Tennis Center moving them to 10-8, 3-2 SCIAC.

This match was a reschedule due to inclement weather the previous week, yet the conditions Monday night included two different delays, halting play once for lightning, then later on for rain.

Redlands got off to another strong start in doubles coming off the last major doubles win against top-ranked Claremont-M-S.  Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) went to work, cruising to the 6-1 win at the top spot.  Caltech tied things up with a win on court two as Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) would fall 6-2. On court three, Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and Jasmine Sheets (Hesperia, CA) put together a well-constructed set, winning 6-2, giving Redlands the early lead.

Singles became complicated as the lightning delay occurred at the end of the players' first sets forcing both teams to warm up again upon returning.  The rain delay happened towards the end of some of the players' second sets or the beginning of their third frames, but the Maroon and Grey were not phased as they pulled out four of the six matches.

Deng at No.1 was not thrown off in the slightest by these delays, picking up the team's second point 6-2, 6-0. A minute later, the Beavers took the next point at No. 6 as Eve Laurent (Portland, OR) would drop in straight sets 6-2,6-3.  After the rain delay, Whelan at No. 2 was able to clock in a 6-2, 6-1 victory moving the score to 3-1.

The last three matches on all went to three sets, which had to be played out since the match was not clinched yet. Reynoso at No. 3 breezed through her first set winning 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-3.  She was able to return after the delay to pull off the 6-3 win in the third. Truong at No. 5 had the opposite match, falling in the first set 6-2, winning 7-5 in the second, before dropping the third, 7-5.  After four hours, Kumar at No. 4 had dropped the opening set 6-2, fought back in the second set to win the tiebreaker, 7-6, and then had to pull off a major come from behind win in the third 7-5 giving UR their fifth point.

Redlands returns to the court this Saturday, April 18 when they host another SCIAC dual this time with Chapman University beginning at 2:00pm.
