Redlands Men’s Tennis handles No. 37 Caltech despite weather delays

REDLANDS, Calif. – On Monday night, the University of Redlands Men's Tennis team handled No. 37 Caltech, rolling 6-1 inside the Verdieck Tennis Center. This match was a reschedule due to bad weather the previous week, yet the conditions Monday night included a lightning delay and possibility of rain.

Redlands went to work quickly in doubles sweeping at all three levels to claim the early point.  All three teams finished within :30 seconds of each other, starting with Jack Hinkle (Bountiful, UT) and Mateen Ghafarshad (Claremont, CA) on court three winning 6-4.  Sam Parsons (Leamington Spa, England) and Cooper Whittington (Lake Oswego, OR) clocked in a 6-4 set as well and Vitomir Petcov (Portland, OR) and MJ Abarca (San Diego, CA) on court one topped things off with a 6-3 victory.

Singles became a little complicated as the lightning delay occurred at the end of the players' first sets or beginning of their second frames, requiring both teams to warm up again after going back out. The Bulldogs though were still able to pull out five of the six matches.
The only point the Beavers picked up for the day was at No. 2 where Gustavo Marcanth (Redondo Beach, CA) dropped in straights 6-1, 6-0.

William Pullin (Peachtree City, GA) was put in at No. 5 and looked unphased after the delay, as he put the team on the score board first in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Next to him, was Hinkle at No. 4 and then Petcov at No.1 who finished at the exact same moment—with these two points giving Redlands the clinch. Hinkle went 6-3, 6-1 and Petcov went 6-2, 6-4. Abarca at No. 2 finished shortly after adding to the landslide victory going 6-4, 6-1.

Last match was Ghafarshad at No. 6 grinding out another lengthy match, coming back in the first set to win 7-6 before sweeping the second set 6-0.

Redlands returns to the court Saturday, April 18 when they host the next SCIAC match up against Chapman University beginning at 11:00am.
