ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team (19-15, 13-6 SCIAC) scored the first seven runs at Chapman University Friday afternoon as they took the series opener, 7-2.
Tyler Barsness (Palm Desert, CA) scored the opening run as he advanced on a fly out by Nate Miller (San Jose, CA) and then scored on an error by the centerfielder.
Following a scoreless stretch that lasted through the fourth inning, Miller singled to left plating Karlsen Drake (San Diego, CA). An error by the Panther shortstop, a double by Jesse Bullard (Riverside, CA), and a single by Tanner Gerosa (Huntington Beach, CA) made it 5-0 Bulldogs through the top of the fifth.
The final two runs came on an Eddy Stone (Petaluma, CA) RBI single in the seventh and an RBI groundout by Mason Chetcuti (Redwood City, CA) in the ninth.
Chapman did pull two runs back on a pair of singles in the ninth as they had three of their seven hits occurring in the inning.
Miller continued his hot hitting with three hits on the afternoon. Stone quietly had four hits from his seven spot and Gerosa went 1-for-2 with three walks.
Starter Joe Godoy (Los Angeles, CA) had a great day, going 8.1 innings with no earned runs allowed and nine strikeouts. Gavin Duenez (Redlands, CA) finished off the final 0.2 innings.
The two sides play the final two games of the series in a doubleheader at The Yard beginning at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning, Saturday, April 18.
