THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team traveled to California Lutheran University Saturday to wrap up their 2026 regular season grinding out a 4-3 victory over the Regals, with the decision coming down to the last match.
This is the 29
th straight victory over CLU for the Bulldogs since 2003. They wrap up their regular season 12-8, 5-2 SCIAC and now head into the SCIAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
Redlands added an impressive, ninth straight doubles point win this season, after taking the early lead over the Regals. The No. 1 duo of
Maegan Deng (Torrance, CA) and
Lindsey Whelan (Mercer Island, WA) added another 6-1 victory to their record after earning the No. 18 ranking in the ITA National Doubles Polls earlier this week. Next to them,
Sophia Truong (Arleta, CA) and
Vrishitha Kumar (Mumbai, India) had another solid win going 6-2. Unfortunately,
Maisy Reynoso (El Paso, TX) and
Jasmine Sheets (Hesperia, CA) ended up falling 7-5 after having been up two breaks.
This doubles point proved crucial as the match would come down to every singles line, with each team splitting three of the next six points. The Regals got on the scoreboard to level things as Sheets would drop at No. 6 6-0, 6-1. At the top spot Deng added another straight sets win 6-2,6-3 after earning a No. 10 ranking in ITA Division III National Singles Polls released earlier this week.
Cal Lutheran took the next two points against Redlands putting them up 3-2, one point away from the win. At No. 4 Kumar fell in a heated 6-1, 7-5 decision and next to her Reynoso at No. 3 came up just short 6-4, 7-5. But the Maroon and Grey continued to battle rallying to grab the next two points. At No. 2 Whelan leveled the match with a solid 6-3, 7-5 win.
Then it came down to the last match with Truong on court No. 5 with a tense, full third set match up. She came close in the first set falling 6-4 but then came back to win the second set 6-4. While she was up 5-4 in the third set, she called a medical time out before pushing through to win 7-5 in the end, clinching the road win for the U of R.
Redlands travels for the SCIAC Tournament Semi-Finals to No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, April 29 with match time TBD.
