CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands baseball team (21-19, 15-9 SCIAC) were within three of No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer in the Semi-Finals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament Thursday afternoon, but a seven-run bottom of the seventh by the Sagehens ended the game in run-rule fashion, 11-1.
The Sagehens jumped out in front 3-0 in the fourth on a pair of singles. They added another run on a solo home run in the sixth. Bulldog All-SCIAC performer Jesse Bullard (Riverside, CA), though, extended his single-season program record with a solo home run, his 16th, in the seventh.
Then in the bottom half of the seventh Pomona-Pitzer scored seven runs coming on five hits. Due to the 10-run rule, the game ended once the lead reached double digits, 11-1.
Tyler Barsness (Palm Desert, CA), Nate Miller (San Jose, CA), Eddy Stone (Petaluma, CA), Bullard, and Aziz Bishop (Baltimore, MD) all had a hit. Notably, as one of the best plate discipline teams in SCIAC, the Bulldogs walked only once, drawn by Tanner Gerosa (Huntington Beach, CA). Joe Godoy (Los Angeles, CA) went 4.2 inning with five strikeouts and was charged with the loss.
The Bulldogs will play an elimination game tomorrow, Friday, May 8 at 3:00 p.m. against No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) at Azusa Pacific University. The Stags were upset 6-4 by the University of La Verne.
