REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands women's soccer team (1-3) were about a foot away from taking a 1-0 lead against University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) in the 60th minute, but Averie Stunz' (Stanwood, WA) shot hit the post and 23 minutes later the Banana Slugs would score the game winner.
Scarlett VonGunten (Shoreline, WA) was the first player to test a keeper on either side when her shot in the 16th minute was saved.
Following a pair of Nicole Immoos (San Luis Obispo, CA) saves in the 18th minute, Madeline Tetens (San Diego, CA) and Claire August (Mountlake Terrace, WA) were able to put shots on frame, but the Banana Slug keeper did well to maintain the scoreless game.
Immoos made one final save in the last two minutes of the first 45 as the two sides went into half the way they started, in a scoreless tie.
UCSC had the first attempt on target, one of seven consecutive shots for the Banana Slugs in the second half, but Redlands was able to get the offensive attack going from about the 58th minute to the 70th as Stunz hit the right post on the break, had a shot blocked and then another that missed wide, while Tetens had another look saved.
Following a stretch of 16 minutes without a shot on target for either side, the Banana Slugs took a free kick off a Bulldog foul and sent the shot on goal where Immoos made the stop. But the save fell out of her grasp going to a UCSC attacker who slotted the free ball home in the 83rd minute.
One final desperation shot by August would get handled in goal in the final :35 seconds as UCSC came away with the road victory.
Redlands has now posted their second game with just one goal allowed. They did that, or better four times in 2025.
Tetens led the way with four shots, two being on goal. August had all three of her attempts find the target, while Stunz had three shots with one off the post. Immoos finished with five saves as the Bulldogs' defense did well to force most of UCSC's shots to come from non-dangerous areas with 17 not finding the mark.
Redlands gets a couple of days off before hosting No. 3 University of Chicago on Sunday, September 13 at 11:00a.m.
