AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team (3-1-2) posted a 2-2 result at Azusa Pacific University (APU) in a non-conference game as they had to settle for a single point after an own goal in the final two minutes of the game tied things up.
In the first minute of the game, it was the Bulldogs gaining the early advantage thanks to Jared Keyvan (Costa Mesa, CA) who scored off an assist by Landon Azavedo (Lake Oswego, OR). Azavedo took a corner on the right side and bent it into the box with his left, and after passing multiple Bulldogs and Cougars, it found Keyvan open on the back post who finished giving UR a 1-0 lead.
Eleven minutes later, though, APU equalized capitalizing on a Jaden Nisperos (San Diego, CA) save and rebound that found the foot of a Cougar attacker who then finished tying things up at 1-1.
The scoring continued in the 26th minute when Azavedo picked up his second assist of the night as he found Colby Anger (San Jose, CA). Azavedo took a free kick, and again with his left, found the head of Anger whose run beat the Cougar defender to the six-yard box where he then beat the keeper with pace over their head for a 2-1 advantage.
Jacob White (Fontana, CA) then forced a save in the 45th minute as the Bulldogs went into the break up 2-1.
The first four shots of the second half came from APU with Nisperos being called into action twice. The first two attempts for Redlands took 30 minutes as Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) and Anger each had their shots miss the target.
APU would then finish the game with the final two looks, the first was saved, the second missed high, but it was a third that does not go down as a shot that proved costly for the Bulldogs.
The Cougars sent in a cross from the left side of the box, which deflected off a Bulldog and into the net.
Redlands will move into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action this Saturday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. when they host the California Institute of Technology in their SCIAC opener.
