REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team (4-1-2) opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play with a 2-0 win over the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Saturday.
Colby Anger (San Jose, CA) and Thomas Lyden (Thornwood, NY) both forced saves in the first four minutes of the game before a bad pass by the back line of the Beavers went past the goalkeeper, who lost his footing, seeing the ball go into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 U of R lead in the seventh minute.
Jaden Nisperos (San Diego, CA) made his first of two stops in the first half at the 12-minute mark. Anger had his own attempt saved for a second time in the 21st minute.
Through the 30th minute Nisperos came up with his second save and Bo Robertson (Portland, OR) had his header handled in goal.
In the 37th minute the Bulldogs connected for a second time. Garrett Colley (Danville, CA) and Zachary Darmanyan (San Diego, CA) combined with each other just outside the top left corner of the penalty area. Colley made the final pass finding Darmanyan who finished across the goal to the far side.
In the second 45 each keeper made three saves with Jared Keyvan (Costa Mesa, CA), Anger, and Luke Wyatt (Pasadena, CA) all being denied a third Bulldog tally.
It was a very competitive game throughout with Redlands holding a 19-13 shot advantage, a 9-5 shots on-goal lead, and a 10-4 edge on corner kicks.
Redlands will look to turn this win into a streak on Wednesday, September 23 when they host the University of La Verne at Farquhar Field at 7:00 p.m.
