REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team (5-1-2, 2-0 SCIAC) shut out the University of La Verne (ULV), 1-0, with Zachary Darmanyan's (San Diego, CA) 52nd minute goal being the difference maker.
The Bulldogs took the first three shots of the game, and it was not until the 37th minute, when Darmanyan forced a save from the ULV keeper.
That Leopard save was the only stop forced by either side as the other 10 shots, eight of which were taken by the Bulldogs, were off target in the opening 45 minutes.
Six minutes into the second half an offsides and a pair of fouls were the only actions until a ULV turnover in their own half was taken advantage of by Landon Azavedo (Lake Oswego, OR) who cut off a pass. He then went to the ground to make a pass to Darmanyan who then dribbled into the box, making a slight cut to his right, let the defender pass by, before slotting the ball calmly into the bottom right corner.
Less than a minute and a half later, though, it was Jaden Nisperos (San Diego, CA) who was forced into his first stop as the Leopards started to push forward.
Despite the desperation by ULV, it took another 20 minutes before they had another look, and it was from distance without much danger.
With nice pressing by the forwards and organized defending the Bulldogs saw out the remaining part of the game with Nisperos making one final long-range save in the final seconds to secure the shutout and a big three points for the Maroon and Grey.
Darmanyan had five shots on the night with two finding the target, which were the only two for Redlands. The Bulldogs did hold a 14-9 shot advantage.
Redlands is back in action this Saturday, September 26 when they make the trip to Claremont to face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps beginning at 7:00 p.m.
