Bulldog Men's Soccer Wins Lucky 13 in Overtime

The University of Redlands men’s soccer team secured its immediate future on Saturday with its 13th-consecutive victory by edging Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, 2-1, in overtime. With the win, the Bulldogs are guaranteed at least a share of their seventh-straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title as well as right to host the SCIAC Postseason Tournament as the top seed.

Amidst the challenges of postponements and indoor practices, the Bulldogs excitedly returned to action on Saturday. Redlands came out firing and played hard throughout the first half but were matched defensively by a stingy Sagehen team. However, in the 42nd minute of play, a new face emerged as a potential hero when sophomore forward Will Kelley (Seattle, WA) took a well-played ball and buried it into the back of the net for his first career goal. With a 1-0 lead, Redlands continued to control the pace of the game while managing the pressure from Pomona-Pitzer. In the 83rd minute of play, the Sagehens capitalized on a Redlands error and snuck the ball into the upper right corner to even the score. Despite a late press by the Bulldogs, the score remained knotted at one apiece at the end of regulation, forcing the game into overtime. A mid-period pep talk by Head Coach Ralph Perez fired up the men and resulted in a quick conclusion as senior forward Kody Andrew (Montana City, MT) put away the game-winner just 2:40 into the extra period.

Redlands men’s soccer (15-2, 12-1 SCIAC) brings the regular conference season to a close on Monday with a rescheduled game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7 p.m. On Thursday, the men return home to host the semifinals of the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The game times will be 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with Redlands playing in the second game. The seeding of tournament depends upon the results of Monday’s games.
