The University of Redlands women's soccer team earned its most
dominating victory since the 1997 season by overpowering Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent
Whittier College in a 10-0 routing on Wednesday night. The
Bulldogs looked to eight different goal-scorers while posting the
second-most goals for a single game in program history.
The women quickly took control of the game and notched their
first goal at the start of the sixth minute when junior Erica Jahn
(Davis, CA) blasted her team-leading fourth goal of the
season. She capitalized on opportunity when junior Becky
Willis's (Escondido, CA) shot rebounded off the Poets goalkeeper.
Less than two minutes later, sophomore Haley Kern (Portland,
OR) took advantage of a one-on-one situation with the Poet
goalkeeper to put away the second goal of the night. Kern
went onto score another goal while freshman Elizabeth "Libby" Sorg
(Woodinville, WA) also earned two goals to lead the Bulldogs.
Additional goals for Redlands came from sophomore Sarah Vert
(Helena, MT), freshman Kelsey O'Callaghan (Salt Lake City, UT),
senior Marypat Hosler (Beaverton, OR), freshman Chelsea Hafley
(Redlands, CA), and senior Katie Sakai (Honolulu, HI). Along
with Willis, five other Bulldogs garnered assists, including Vert,
junior Steffany Becker (Las Vegas, NV), freshman Jessica Hoyt
(Boise, ID), freshman Breann Puchalski (Redlands, CA), and
sophomore Jaclyn Cooperrider (Boise, ID), who led the team with
two.
As a team, Redlands tallied a stellar 20 shots on goal, which
was half of their total shots. On the defensive side of the ball,
the Bulldogs effectively shut down the Poets, allowing just two
shots.
Redlands played 27 of its 28 players.
