Any concerns on whether the University of Redlands women's
soccer team could win on the road were put to rest as the Bulldogs
dominated the tempo of the game and defeated a strong University of
La Verne team by a 3-0 final on Oct. 18 in La Verne.
Senior midfielder Becky Willis (Escondido, CA) had a breakout game
offensively, scoring twice on five shots. She struck first in the
17th minute, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Kelsey Kimmel
(Clinton, WA) to the back of the net. Willis scored goal No. 2 off
of a feed by freshman midfielder Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) just
four minutes later, bringing the score to 2-0 in favor of
Redlands.
Scoring closed out in the 37th minute when freshman forward Kaily
Benenati (Denver, CO) capitalized on a pass from sophomore
midfielder Leslie Horner (Portland, OR).
Junior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) saved one
shot and kept a clean sheet throughout the match for the shutout.
Tatiana Gutierrez saved four shots and surrendered three goals for
the Leopards.
Redlands (9-4-1, 5-3 SCIAC) kept its hopes alive for hosting the
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
postseason tournament as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges fell to
cross-campus rival Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, bringing the Bulldogs
within three points of the first-place Athenas. The maroon and gray
travel to Whittier College next to face the Poets on Wednesday,
Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
