The University of Redlands men's basketball team relied on
a 17-point halftime lead to earn a 78-64 victory over the visiting
Beavers of Caltech on Wednesday night in Currier Gym. The Bulldogs
jumped ahead early, shooting 48.4% in the opening period. Despite a
late rally by the Beavers, Redlands never relinquished control of
the game en route to the important Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win.
The Beavers put together a solid effort in the second half,
culminating in an impressive 55.6 shooting percentage. However,
Redlands took advantage of Caltech's 25 turnovers, converting
them into 24 points. In addition, the
Bulldogs made 14 second-chance points.
Redlands looked to senior forward Travis Miller (Coto de Caza, CA)
and sophomore guard Matt Dietrich (Phoenix, AZ) to lead the charge
with 16 points each. Miller went 7-for-9 from the floor and grabbed
11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Junior
guard Patrick Coffey (San Carlos, CA) chipped in 13 points, while
sophomore guard Kent Ervin (Bend, OR) added 11.
Caltech gained double figures from Ryan Elmquist with 20 points,
Matthew Dellatore with 18, and Travis Haussler with 12.
The Bulldogs take to the road for their next two games, heading to
Occidental College on Saturday, January 31, and then to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, February 4. Both games tip off
at 7:30 p.m.
