The #14 Redlands women's tennis team opened the 2009 season with
a tough non-conference loss to visiting Concordia University -
Irvine on Saturday. After coming up short in tight tiebreak
at #3 doubles, the Bulldogs failed to make up the difference in
singles, falling to the Eagles by a score of 4-5.
In doubles, Redlands rallied at all positions but only came up
with one point as the duo of sophomore Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu,
HI) and senior Kaleena Wakamatsu (Maui, HI) combined for the 8-6
victory.
Down 1-2, the Bulldogs needed four of their six singles players
to win. Yoshinaga continued her solid showing by cruising by
her opponent at the #4 spot, 6-2, 6-2. In addition, senior
Tori Damiani (Sacramento, CA) came out on top of a three-set
victory at #3, winning 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Rounding out
the Redlands' point-scorers, junior Whitney Waters (Austin,
TX) fought back at #6 in order to capture an exciting 2-6,
7-5, 7-6 (1) win.
Redlands (0-1) looks forward to hosting non-conference Division
III rival, Chapman University, on Friday, February 13, at 2 p.m.
