Box Score Sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) scored twice
as the University of Redlands women's soccer team took care
of Whittier College, 4-0, in Whittier on Saturday afternoon.
Phillips converted on a pass from junior forward Leslie Horner
(Portland, OR) in the sixth minute, and Horner found Phillips again
in the 14th minute to put the Bulldogs up early, 2-0.
For the second time in as many games, junior defender Breann
Puchalski (Redlands, CA) notched a goal. In the 35th minute, she
beat out the Whittier goalkeeper to give Redlands a commanding 3-0
lead heading into halftime.
Junior midfielder Emily Birzak (Columbia, MD) found the feet of
sophomore forward Kaily Benenati (Denver, CO) in the 79th minute,
and Benenati put the ball in the back of the net to close out
scoring.
The Maroon and Gray held a lopsided advantage in shots (23-6) and
blanked the Poets in corner-kick opportunities (4-0).
Senior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) combined for
a shutout with freshman goalkeepers Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills,
CA) and Rachel Foreman (San Jose, CA). Gina-Marie DiPierro saved
eight shots in goal for the Poets but sustained the loss.
With the defeat, Whittier drops to 2-8-2 overall (0-6-1 SCIAC).
Redlands (7-4, 6-1 SCIAC) hosts Occidental College on Wednesday
evening at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs bested the Tigers, 2-0, when they
met in Eagle Rock on Sept. 19.
