Box Score Head Coach Suzette Soboti earned her 100th Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory when the
University of Redlands women's soccer team prevailed, 1-0,
over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday in Redlands.
Soboti, who garnered her 100th career victory on Oct. 11, 2006
against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Farquhar Field, has
fared better in conference competition than any of her predecessors
at the helm of the Redlands women's soccer program, owning
three times more victories than all other previous coaches
combined.
The Bulldogs capitalized on a scoring chance early when junior
defender Chelsea Hafley (Redlands, CA) pushed a pass from the left
wing to junior midfielder Jessi Hoyt (Boise, ID), who subsequently
finished to the right-hand side of the net.
After finding a groove in the final 20 minutes of regulation, the
Sagehens nearly knotted the game at one when Kathleen Kerr charged
down the center of the field with the ball, facing little traffic.
Senior goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT) stepped out
to cut her angle off, and junior defender Sandie Shuker (Redlands,
CA) jumped in front of Kerr upon her release to send the ball
harmlessly out of bounds. The Sagehens would squander the corner
kick opportunity that ensued, and the Maroon and Gray would
eventually bring the ball back into its offensive third to end the
match.
Rawlings stopped three shots in the shutout victory in between the
pipes for Redlands. Pomona-Pitzer's Alex Scharr matched
Rawlings' save total, yet she accounted for the match's
only goal.
With the win, the Bulldogs maintain their second-place spot in the
SCIAC standings but still sit four points back of
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. The Athenas, however, remain idle
on Wednesday as they face a bye while the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
men's team takes on Caltech, offering the Maroon and Gray an
opportunity to cut the lead to one.
Redlands (5-4, 4-1 SCIAC) travels to La Verne on Wednesday for a 4
p.m. matchup against the Leopards of the University of La Verne.
