Box Score The No. 21 University of Redlands football team dominated
the University of La Verne in the teams' opening Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game on
Saturday night. On the heels of five passing touchdowns by senior
quarterback Dan Selway (Villa Park, CA), the Bulldogs ran away with
the 51-24 victory at Ted Runner Stadium in front of 1,619
fans during Take a Kid to the Game Night®.
The Maroon and Gray struck first off of its first possession when
Selway found senior running back Daniel Allen (Felton, CA) on a
two-yard pass, culminating a nine-play, 55-yard drive to start the
game.
After the Redlands defense forced La Verne back 10 yards on its
third drive, the Bulldogs converted its next offensive opportunity
on a five-yard pass to senior wide receiver Brian Putman
(Bakersfield, CA) for the 14-0 advantage.
However, the Leopards cut the lead to seven with their longest
touchdown of the night, just nine seconds into the second quarter.
Using a surprise double pass, senior quarterback Anthony Andre
(Riverside, CA) found sophomore wide receiver Allen Daniels
(Bakersfield, CA) on a 38-yard reception into the end zone.
Although La Verne rallied for two more touchdowns and a field goal,
it never pulled any closer as Redlands simply erupted for 51
points.
Selway found three different receivers in the end zone, with Putman
clearly being Selway's favorite target as he racked up 212
yards on 11 catches for the fourth-best total of receiving yards in
school history. Selway ended up with 323 yards on 22 completions.
Junior running back Daylan Swedlow (Lake Arrowhead, CA) managed 48
yards on the ground, including a one-yard run for the score.
The Bulldog defense remained stingy by holding La Verne to a mere
six yards rushing. Senior linebacker Scott Garner (Ventura, CA) led
the game with nine tackles, while junior defensive back Mike
Nicolini (Novato, CA) added eight along with a 30-yard punt return
for a touchdown late in the game. Senior defensive back Jared Fink
(El Paso, TX) penetrated the Leopard line and sacked the
quarterback three times for a loss of 18 yards.
Redlands (3-0, 1-0 SCIAC) heads to Occidental College on Saturday
for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Tigers.
