Box Score Sophomore midfielder Maddy Phillips (Seattle, WA) of the
University of Redlands women's soccer team supplied three
goals as the Maroon and Gray routed the University of La Verne,
4-0, on Saturday afternoon in Redlands.
Prior to the start of the match, the team recognized its lone
senior, goalkeeper Tenley Rawlings (Salt Lake City, UT), as a part
of Senior Day festivities.
Just 15 minutes into the contest, junior defender Chelsea Hafley
(Redlands, CA) rocketed a long through ball from the midfield,
which found the feet of Phillips. Phillips took control of the
ball, and easily snuck it past the La Verne keeper for the 1-0
advantage.
Despite many chances to increase their lead in the first stanza, a
number of offside whistles kept the Bulldogs from piling on
early.
The flood gates opened in the second half, however, as the Maroon
and Gray scored three goals in a span of 22 minutes.
Sophomore forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) tried to score in the
53rd minute, but the attempt ricocheted off of a Leopard defender.
Phillips then took possession of the rebound and fired home a shot
that put the Bulldogs up, 2-0.
Phillips found the back of the net for the third time at the
61-minute mark when she dribbled down the right-center portion of
the field and booted a shot that rippled the twine.
A slew of first-year players contributed to the final goal of the
match. Freshman forward Gabi Juliano (Brookfield, CT) possessed the
ball and distributed to freshman forward Samantha Rivera (Thousand
Oaks, CA). Rivera took a few touches on the left wing and laced a
low centering cross to junior midfielder Emily Birzak (Columbia,
MD), who subsequently buried the pass for her first collegiate
score.
The Bulldogs used a trio of keepers, and none of the three
netminders faced a shot on goal. Rawlings was credited with the
win, guarding the net for 70 scoreless minutes. La Verne's
Brigette Jennings entertained a barrage of shots and made 15
saves.
La Verne (5-11-1, 3-7-1 SCIAC) hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Colleges in its season finale on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
Redlands (11-6, 9-3 SCIAC) will compete as the No. 2 seed in the

Postseason Tournament, which starts on Thursday in Claremont. The
Bulldogs take on Occidental College in the semifinal round on
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges' Pritzlaff Field. Game time
