The No. 14 Redlands women's tennis team swept two Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponents
this weekend, posting 9-0 results over Occidental College and the
University of La Verne.
In Friday's match against Occidental, the Bulldogs jumped out
to an early 3-0 lead with solid play in doubles. Redlands
dropped only four games in the three eight-game pro-sets with
the No. 2 team of senior Kaleena Wakamatsu (Maui, HI) and sophomore
Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) and the No. 3 duo of junior Rachael
Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and senior Tori Damiani (Sacramento, CA)
both earning 8-1 victories. The top team of juniors Whitney Waters
(Austin, TX) and Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) also cruised by their
opponents with a final score of 8-2.
During the singles matches, the Bulldogs won every duel in straight
sets. Redlands sealed the team victory with decisive showings by
Wakamatsu at No. 5 (6-2, 6-1) and Waters at No. 6 (6-1, 6-3).
On Saturday, Redlands headed to the University of La Verne for a
conference match with the Leopards. The Bulldog women's
tennis team came away with another 9-0 victory with a new list of
contributors in singles. After the regular crew of doubles
competitors put the Bulldogs up by a score of 3-0, junior Sutton
Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) made quick work of her opponent at No.
4 with a 6-1, 6-1 performance, while freshman Nicole Gerentine
(Austin, TX) cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 5 to clinch the
match. Junior Carrie McCann (McMinnville, OR) also came up with a
solid win, posting a 6-1, 6-0 showing at No. 6. Finally, Miller,
freshman Kristen Hunnicutt (Ahwatukee, AZ), and senior Kelly
Lesoing (Bellingham, WA) provided wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3,
respectively, resulting in the 9-0 sweep.
Redlands (2-1, 2-0 SCIAC) heads to Caltech on Saturday for a 9:30
a.m. SCIAC match against the Beavers.
