The University of Redlands women's tennis team took to the
road on Saturday and captured wins over Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Caltech and Division
II foe Cal Poly Pomona.
Against the Beavers, Redlands dropped only four total games in
the 9-0 sweep with seven matches coming in shutout performances.
Freshman Kristen Hunnicutt (Ahwatukee, AZ) teamed up with junior
Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) for a dominating 8-0 victory at
No. 3 doubles, while junior Carrie McCann (McMinnville, OR) posted
a 6-0, 6-0 showing at No. 6 singles.
Later that day, the Bulldogs faced off against Cal Poly Pomona
and captured a solid 7-2 win over the Broncos. Redlands jumped out
to an early lead by winning two of the doubles matches, each by
scores of 8-6. The top duo of juniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and
Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) as well as the No. 3 team of junior
Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and senior Tori Damiani
(Sacramento, CA) came out on top for the Bulldogs. In singles, the
women's tennis team posted two-set victories at four slots,
including No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6. Senior Kaleena Wakamatsu
(Maui, HI) cruised by her opponent at the fifth spot by scores of
6-3, 6-4, while Miller put together a solid 6-4, 6-2 performance at
the No. 1 position.
Redlands (4-1, 3-0 SCIAC) looks forward to hosting regional
rival Chapman University on March 6 at 3 p.m. on Verdieck Courts.
