The No. 14 University of Redlands women's tennis team took
down No. 30 Chapman University in a non-conference match on Friday.
Squeezing in competition between bouts of rain, the Bulldogs
prevailed over the Panthers by a score of 8-1.
In doubles action, Redlands captured all three matches with the
No. 3 duo of senior Tori Damiani (Sacramento, CA) and junior
Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) making quick work of their
opponents with an 8-2 decision. The No. 2 team of sophomore Sara
Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) and senior Kaleena Wakamatsu (Maui, HI)
followed suit with their 8-3 showing, while juniors Whitney Waters
(Austin, TX) and Paige Sumida came away with a hard-fought 8-6 win
at No. 1.
With a 3-0 lead after doubles, the Bulldogs maintained control
by winning at all but one singles match. Sumida posted a 6-2,
6-1 victory at the No. 2 slot as Damiani cruised by her opponent at
No. 3 by scores of 6-1, 6-0. In addition, freshman Kristen
Hunnicutt earned a 6-0, 6-2 showing at No. 6. Yoshinaga posted a
6-2, 7-6 (6) win at No. 4, while Wakamatsu came away victorious
when her opponent retired late in the second set, 7-5, 4-1.
Redlands (5-1) takes on No. 17 Trinity University (TX) on
Saturday at 11 a.m. in a non-conference match at Verdieck Courts.
