The No. 11 University of Redlands women's tennis team
faced off against the only other undefeated opponent in the
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) on
Sunday but the Bulldogs came up short against the No. 7 Sagehens of
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges by a score of 2-7.
In Sunday's match, the Bulldogs lost two hard-fought
doubles matches to face an early 0-3 deficit. The No. 3 duo
of junior Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and senior Tori
Damiani (Sacramento, CA) fell in a tiebreak, 9-8 (5). The No. 2
team of sophomore Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) and senior Kaleena
Wakamatsu (Maui, HI) suffered a tough 9-7 loss.
In singles, the Bulldogs' only bright spots came at No. 2,
with junior Paige Sumida snagging a 7-5, 6-7 (7), 10-4 victory, and
at No. 6, with junior Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) polishing off her
opponent by scores of 7-5, 6-4.
Redlands (13-6, 6-1 SCIAC) looks forward to the SCIAC
Tournament, which takes place on Friday and Saturday at
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
With Sunday's loss, Redlands enters the SCIAC Tournament
as the No. 2 seed.
