The No. 11 University of Redlands women's tennis team took
down Cal Lutheran University by a score of 8-1 in the second round
of the 2009 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(SCIAC) Tournament.
The Bulldogs quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead by winning at every
doubles slot. The No. 1 duo of juniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and
Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) dominated their opponents with an 8-0
showing. The No. 2 team of sophomore Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI)
and senior Kaleena Wakamatsu (Maui, HI) also came up with a solid
8-1 win, while the No. 3 team of senior Tori Damiani (Sacramento,
CA) and junior Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) cruised to an 8-2
victory.
In singles, the Bulldogs gained quick points from Wakamatsu at No.
5 and freshman Kristen Hunnicutt (Ahwatukee, AZ) at No. 6 as they
dropped only four games each in their two-set victories. Miller
came up with a 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory at the top spot, while Sumida
prevailed by scores of 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2. Finally, Damiani posted a
6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3 to round out the Bulldogs'
point-scorers.
Earlier in the day, the Bulldogs dismantled the Poets of Whittier
College by a score of 5-0 in the opening round of the tournament.
Redlands swept the doubles with ease as the team dropped only two
games in the three matches. The No. 3 duo of Hunnictt and junior
Sutton Anderson (Breckenridge, CO) earned an 8-0 victory, with the
No. 1 team of Yoshinaga and Wakamatsu and the No. 2 duo of Damiani
and Miller both winning by an 8-1 final.
In singles, freshman Nicole Gerentine (Austin, TX) and junior
Carrie McCann (McMinnville, OR) finished off their respective
opponents at No. 5 and No. 6 to seal the win for the Bulldogs.
Redlands (15-6, 8-1 SCIAC) takes on No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in
the tournament final on Saturday at 10 a.m. With a win, the
Bulldogs would share the conference championship with the Sagehens.
