Earlier today, the No. 8 University of Redlands women's
tennis team dominated No. 24 Chapman University in the second round
of the NCAA Championships at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
Competing in their ninth postseason appearance in ten years, the
Bulldogs cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Panthers with solid play
at every spot.
In doubles, Redlands captured 8-2 showings at No. 2 and No. 3,
while the No. 1 duo of juniors Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and Whitney
Waters (Austin, TX) came away with an 8-4 win.
Redlands continued to control the match in singles, as sophomore
Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) made quick work of her No. 4
opponent, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Kristen Hunnicutt (Ahwatukee, AZ) also
captured an impressive 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, earning
the victory for the Bulldogs.
With the match decided at 5-0, the remaining singles matches did
not finish.
The Bulldogs (17-6) look forward to facing familiar foe
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (18-4) in tomorrow's third-round match
at 12 noon. The Sagehens defeated the University of Texas –
Tyler by a score of 5-0 in their match earlier today.
Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer have split matches this season, with the
Bulldogs winning the most recent one by a score of 5-4.
